Roof Decking Damage: Should You Repair or Replace?

Your roof’s decking may not be as noticeable as your shingles, but that doesn’t mean it’s no longer important. It plays a crucial role in preserving your roofing system’s structural integrity. Also known as “sheathing”, the roof deck is a material installed on top of your roof’s trusses or rafters. Get up into the attic, and you can see these wooden panels that cover these structural components. During roof installation, the deck provides support for the next two layers – the underlayment and the outer roof covering.

The deck is made of wood or wood composite, which means it is vulnerable to damage, especially if exposed to water. Mold and rot may appear soon after, impacting the structure’s long-term durability. Given the types of damage it can sustain, it’s safe to say that simple roof repair just won’t cut it.

Replacement as the Only Solution to Roof Deck Damage

You know the roof decking has extensive moisture damage if you notice any of these signs:

  • Water stains on the ceiling and walls, which are indications of a severe roof leak
  • Sagging roofline
  • Roof punctures, holes or gaps
  • Mold or mildew in the attic
  • Discoloration in the decking
  • Damp decking that feels soft to the touch

Discovering two or more of these signs usually means that your roof is close to the end of its serviceable life and is due for a replacement. As such, you’ll want to make sure that the decking is replaced first before you install a new roofing system. I've changed my review from a 1 star to a 4 stars. Matt Stone got right on a pretty poor job done installing a skylight. He had his guys remove the skylight, move it, repair the roof and inside ceiling to its original state, paint it, repair some external trim that was damaged, and all within a few days after talking to him about the multiple problems. It was really an eyesore from the inside. I'd give a 5 star if this had been done well the first time. The skylight just didn't fit the space I first wanted it and was told it would. More communication about the potential problems might have allowed this to be done right the first time. But, Pressure Point Roofing gets 5 starts for making amends and correcting a pretty ugly problem, very fast! Thank you.
