Hard Water Stains: How to Get Rid of Them on Windows

The reason for this may lie with the water you used for the task – it may contain a high concentration of minerals. Here’s how you can get rid of hard water stains on your windows.

But First, How Does Hard Water Affect Your Windows?

Water becomes hard when it passes through areas with a high content of minerals like magnesium and calcium. When hard water is used for cleaning windows, it leaves small mineral deposits, or limescale, on the surface after it evaporates. Over time, the surface of the window will develop a thick, whitish glaze because of the mineral buildup. 

What You Should Do

The good news is that these stains are simple enough to remove. Here’s what to do:

  1. You just need to prepare a cleaning solution of water and vinegar. 
  2. Soak a towel in the mixture and press it onto the stains on the window.
  3. Leave it there for a minute or two. The acidity of the mixture will soften the mineral deposit, making it easier to wipe off.
  4. Wipe and press the towel on the window until the stains are completely removed. 
  5. Repeat as many times as necessary. Given how your windows are an important design element, it pays to do a thorough job at removing these hard water stains.
  6. Dry the window with a clean cloth, and then shine them with a spray cleaner.

I've changed my review from a 1 star to a 4 stars. Matt Stone got right on a pretty poor job done installing a skylight. He had his guys remove the skylight, move it, repair the roof and inside ceiling to its original state, paint it, repair some external trim that was damaged, and all within a few days after talking to him about the multiple problems. It was really an eyesore from the inside. I'd give a 5 star if this had been done well the first time. The skylight just didn't fit the space I first wanted it and was told it would. More communication about the potential problems might have allowed this to be done right the first time. But, Pressure Point Roofing gets 5 starts for making amends and correcting a pretty ugly problem, very fast! Thank you.
